Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I buy organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can be grown naturally by farmers, and they don't need to be treated with chemicals to control pests or weeds.

Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.

What are the benefits of organic fruits?

Organic food is free from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and hormones. They also contain more nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, E, and K, plus omega-3 fatty acids. Organic food is healthier for the environment and our bodies.

Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.

While most consumers associate organics with produce, many organic products include dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, personal care items, pet food, and household cleaning supplies.

The USDA defines organic as crops that are grown according to federal standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.

A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

The requirements for organic fruits and vegetables are met if they are labeled 100 percent organic. But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?

Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They come from clean water sources and free-range animals. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product was produced by nature and therefore contains no harmful substances.

Natural means how food is grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are often fresher than others because they haven't been treated with heat, radiation, or chemical preservatives. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types have been tested for quality and safety. Organic produce is safer than conventionally produced produce.

Most grocery shops now carry organic options. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.

If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
