According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.


Do organic foods offer health benefits?

Organic foods may not be healthy for everyone. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.

Organic food is free from artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides as well as hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Organic produce is produced without the use of harmful chemicals which could affect human health.

There are also fewer additives used during processing. Organic products are healthier than those that use additives during processing.

Studies have shown organic foods have more nutrients and antioxidants that conventionally grown fruits, vegetables.

Even though organic farming methods can be more costly than conventional farming methods they are often more productive. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps prevent erosion and conserve water. Organic farms require less fuel and energy because they don't contain toxic chemicals.

Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?

Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural conditions and without the use of any artificial inputs like fungicides or herbicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
