They are also generally more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.
What is organic food?
Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.
Organic farming practices can also preserve soil quality by reducing erosion, and conserving water resources. Organics are also better for your health as they contain more nutrients that conventional food. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.
How do you know if your food is organic?
Ask any chef and he will tell you that fresh ingredients are the most important thing. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.
The same goes for our food. Organics can be traced back to their source and whereabouts. We also know that it didn't have any harmful chemicals.
Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). These substances aren't permitted for organic farmers.
However, organic farming is not an easy task. There are many ways to safely grow organic crops.
Sustainable agriculture is sometimes called organic farming. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.
Crop rotation, crop rotation, cover cropping and composting manure are all organic farming methods. These techniques can prevent soil erosion, improve water quality, and help reduce the risk of it happening again.
They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.
There are two types certified programs for organic products. One is certified through the USDA National Organic Program and the other by independent certifying agents. Both require strict adherence to organic standards.
Certified organic products may bear the USDA seal or the symbol O Seal, which indicates that the product meets federal requirements.

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?
Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.
For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.
A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
