What are some of the most popular organic products in your country?

Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

They are also generally more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.


Are organic foods better?

According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

These are some standard terms you might come across when shopping for organic items:

  • Paraben Free – These chemicals are used to preserve certain cosmetic products, but can cause serious health problems if taken in large amounts.
  • Fragrance-Free means that the product doesn't contain any essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty-Free--No animals were hurt in the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients - The ingredient is derived naturally from the animal or plant.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian – The ingredients can either be vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-Free: This is when gluten was eliminated from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic – The product is free of toxins, carcinogens and other dangerous compounds that can harm your health.
  • Biodegradable means that the product can be thrown away as it will become harmless components.
  • Pesticide-Free: No pesticides used during growing or harvesting.
  • GMO-Free - this means that none of the ingredients in the product contains genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic means that all the ingredients have been grown using methods that protect the soil and water as well as wildlife and farmers.


What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.
