Frequently Asked Questions

What is organic beef?

Organic meat is organic food that has been grown naturally without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or hormones. Organic meat also indicates that animals were not fed genetically modified food. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.

Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. Eating organic foods helps reduce pollution in the environment, such as rivers and lakes. Organic farmers don't use harmful chemicals to kill birds and insects, which helps wildlife.

You can eat organic meats and produce whenever you can. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often offer discounts to their customers by shopping locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

What are the most loved organic products?

Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

They are also generally more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.

While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.

Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

Is organic the same as pesticide-free?

Organic food is organic and free of pesticides. This means organic food is free from pesticides and fertilizers.

Organic produce contains more nutrients and is healthier than conventionally manufactured foods, as it does not contain any harmful additives.

Farmers must follow strict guidelines to grow organic crops under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP).

These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotating, pest control and water conservation.

Organic farming also promotes healthy ecosystems which are beneficial to wildlife and natural habitats.

What is organic food?

Organic food does not use pesticides or fertilizers. These chemicals can be harmful for your health.

Organic food is produced naturally and without any harmful substances, such as chemical fertilizers or pesticides. These chemicals can be harmful to both animals and people.

Inorganic food includes meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, grains, vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs.

Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming, for example, uses natural methods and soil amendments in order to grow crops. Conventional farming, however, uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. The National Organic Program Standards require that all organic foods are free of prohibited substances such as antibiotics and growth hormones, genetically modified organisms or industrial solvents. Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.

Is organic food better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.

Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.

Are there health benefits to eating organic food?

Even though organic foods might not be for everyone, there are some health benefits. There are certain health benefits to those who consume organic foods regularly.

Organic food does not contain artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It also doesn't contain fungicides. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.

There are also fewer additives used during processing. Organic products are more nutritious than those made from non-organic ingredients.

Studies have shown that organic foods are more nutritious and rich in antioxidants than fruits and veggies grown from conventional sources.

While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps prevent erosion and conserve water. Organic farms require less fuel and energy because they don't contain toxic chemicals.

Some people fear that organic foods can be more costly than conventional foods. Prices will vary depending where you live. Organic apples, for example, are more expensive than regular apples.

But, if we look at the total cost of a combination of both types and fruits, we'll see organic is much cheaper.

Do you really need to buy organic?

It all depends upon who you are. It doesn't matter if organic food isn't for you.

You can purchase organic food if it is delicious. Organic foods are safer as most commercial growers use chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified species (GMOs) to produce their crops.

Organic agriculture conserves the environment and promotes biodiversity.

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural conditions and without the use of any artificial inputs like fungicides or herbicides. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
