Frequently Asked Questions

Why is organic produce important?

Our health is dependent on organic produce. Organic produce is the best way to eat healthy foods. Not only is it better for us, but it's also more environmentally friendly because it doesn't rely on pesticides and fertilizers.

Organic farming relies on natural methods to cultivate crops, without the use of harmful chemicals. This means fewer environmental pollutants, making it safer for humans and animals. So when you choose organic food, you're helping to protect yourself and the planet.

The benefits of organic food go beyond our health, though. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. It means that organic fruits, vegetables and other foods are fresher tasting, more vibrant and last longer.

That's why eating organic matters so much. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.

Is organic produce healthy?

There are two types. Those we grow or those we get from someone else. Of course, there are exceptions to both categories, but for the most part, the answer to your question is yes. Organic food is healthier because it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Many grocery stores now sell organic food. This makes it easier for customers to select organic products.

Organic food is better tasting and healthier because it contains more vitamins and minerals. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.

The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are currently more than 30,000,000 acres of US farmland which have been designated organic.

Organic food is often less expensive than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms don't have the expense of expensive chemical inputs, such as insecticides and/or fungicides. They can charge lower prices.

According to the Environmental Working Group organic food is 10 percent cheaper per pound than conventionally manufactured food. Organic food is an option if you want to improve your health and the health of your family.

Organic food has been a popular alternative for standard American diets. Organic food is not only available in gourmet restaurants and specialty markets, as many people may believe. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.

In recent years, organic food sales have been on the rise. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used, and there is no animal testing. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.

Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
