According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.


What is organic meat?

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
