Frequently Asked Questions
Organic foods are better for us.
According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.
Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.
What's the difference?
Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.
"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. You may also find products that are labeled as "natural", which could contain synthetic ingredients.
Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.
Is organic produce healthy?
There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is healthier since it doesn't include any harmful chemicals.
Organic food can be found in supermarkets throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Organic food can now be found in many grocery stores making it easier for shoppers to choose organic products.
Organic food has higher levels vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which makes it more delicious and nutritious. Organics are often grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This means that they do not pollute the soil and water sources.
The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are over 30 million acres of US organic farmland.
Organic food is often more affordable than conventional food. For the same amount, consumers pay less. Organic farms are free to charge less for their crops, as they don't need to pay expensive chemical inputs such insecticides orfungicides.
According to Environmental Working Group, organic food can be 10 percent cheaper per pound when compared to conventionally produced food. If you care about the health of yourself and your family, consider switching to organic food.
Organic food has been a popular alternative for standard American diets. Many people believe that organic food can only be found in specialty markets or gourmet restaurants. This is false. Organic food is easily available in all regular grocery stores in the United States.
In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The market value of organic food in the US was $43 billion in 2012, up from $21 billion in 2007.
What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?
USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.
It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.
Does organic mean it is pesticide-free?
Organic food is organic and free of pesticides. This means organic food is free from pesticides and fertilizers.
Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) requires farmers to follow strict guidelines for growing crops certified as organic.
These guidelines cover soil preparation, crop rotation and pest control. They also include water conservation and harvesting techniques.
Organic farming techniques also contribute to healthy ecosystems that benefit wildlife as well as natural habitats.

How To
Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?
Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).
In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.
For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. Groceries sales increased by 12 per cent during this time. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.
The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
