Frequently Asked Questions
Why should you buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. Make healthy food choices.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:
Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.
USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.
Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."
Be sure to read all ingredient labels. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.
Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.
What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?
Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.
The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.
Organic produce is more nutritious than traditional produce due to the fact that it contains less harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.
What are organic products that can be used on the skin?
Organic skincare products are made without synthetic chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, talc, triclosan, titanium dioxide, triethanolamine, vitamin A palmitate, etc.
Organic skincare products do not contain artificial colours, fragrances or preservatives.
They also help to preserve healthy skin and prevent premature aging.
These are some standard terms you might come across when shopping for organic items:
- Paraben Free – These chemicals are used to preserve certain cosmetic products, but can cause serious health problems if taken in large amounts.
- Fragrance-Free: The product is free of essential oils or fragrances.
- Cruelty-Free--No animals were hurt in the manufacturing process.
- Natural Ingredients - the ingredient is naturally derived from the plant or animal.
- Vegetarian/Vegetarian - All ingredients are vegan or vegetarian.
- Gluten-Free: This is when gluten was eliminated from the formulation.
- Non-Toxic-The product doesn't contain any toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and/or other harmful substances that could be harmful to your health.
- Biodegradable product - when thrown out, the product will disintegrate into harmless components.
- Pesticide Free – There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
- GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
- Certified Organic means all ingredients were grown in ways that preserve the soil, water and air.
Statistics
- Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
- Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To
What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products can be grown without synthetic fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.
Natural means how food is grown. It is used to describe food that has not been processed into its final form, such as fruits. Natural foods are often more fresh than others, because they haven’t been processed with heat, radiation or chemical preservations. Some people don't believe that natural means healthy. Many experts say there isn't much difference between conventional and organic foods. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. But organic produce has fewer pollutants and pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce.
Most grocery stores offer organic options. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified. Biodynamic Association Certified. Rainforest Alliance Certified.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
