Frequently Asked Questions
What is organic?
Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.
Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. Organic foods reduce pollution in rivers, lakes and landfills. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.
Buy organic meats whenever possible. This is the best way for you to eat healthy, organic meats. Buying local helps keep more money circulating within the community rather than going out of state. Local businesses often pass down savings to customers when they shop locally. Shopping locally helps to keep American workers employed, as opposed to sending them overseas.
Do organic foods offer health benefits?
Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.
Organic food is produced without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.
The use of additives in the processing process is also less common. Organic products are likely to be healthier than nonorganic.
Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.
Even though organic farming methods can be more costly than conventional farming methods they are often more productive. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps preserve water resources and prevents erosion. Plus, because organic farms aren't treated with toxic chemicals, these farms typically require less energy and fuel.
People are worried that organic foods may be more expensive then conventional. However, prices vary depending on where you live. Organic apples, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive that conventional apples.
But if you look at the total price of a basket of both types of fruit, you'll see that buying organic is cheaper.
So should you go organic?
It all depends on your personality. Organic food is not for you if you don’t like it.
However, if you enjoy good-tasting food, you can buy organic food. Organic food is safer than traditional commercial produce, as they are not subject to chemical pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Organic agriculture helps to protect the environment by conserving natural resources, and promoting biodiversity.
What are the top organic products?
Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.
But they tend to be more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to know which foods are popular today and whether trends are changing.
The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.
That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
What are some of the benefits of organic agriculture?
Organic farming provides farmers with a way of producing food without using chemicals. The farmers don't have to worry about pesticides causing harm to their crops and animals.
Organic farming also permits for the use of natural fertilizers. These fertilizers promote healthy plants and decrease the amount of chemicals used.
Organic farming can also be environmentally friendly. To recycle nutrients back into soil, farmers often resort to composting. This reduces the risk of pollution and helps conserve precious resources.
Organic farming can increase crop yields and help the environment. This is due to the fact that organic farming uses much less water during growth season.
Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. Healthier foods are demanded by consumers who are more aware of the dangers posed by pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
This increases demand for organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.
Is organic food better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.
Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

How To
What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?
Organic products are produced without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product is natural and does not contain any harmful substances.
The term "natural" refers how food is grown. This term is often used to refer to foods that are not processed into final forms (such as fruits). Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. But organic produce has fewer pollutants and pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce.
Most grocery stores offer organic options. For organic meats, poultry, eggs and seafood, you should check with your local supermarket. Some companies only sell organic products, while others offer separate sections. USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified. Biodynamic Association Certified. Rainforest Alliance Certified.
These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
