What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. For healthy eating, you don’t have to spend a lot. Sometimes, it takes a bit of creativity to save money while eating well. Here are my top tips for keeping food costs down and still enjoying the many benefits of organic meat.

  1. Shop at wholesale clubs - Sams Club or Costco are great places to buy bulk foods such as chicken breasts and pork chops. These stores often offer discounts on large quantities of meat, up to 50 pounds, if you are lucky enough to be near one. This way you won't end up with any leftover meat. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
  2. Online shopping is a great way to find meat at a discounted price. Amazon has Prime Pantry, a weekly sale that offers free shipping for orders over $35. You can get discounts on ground beef, beef roasts, lamb steaks and pork loins. You can easily browse their website to see what is available at different times.
  3. Local farmers will usually be cheaper than big-box retailers since they don't pay large fees to stock their shelves. They also know what their animals ate and drink so they can tell exactly what is inside.
  4. Look for lean cuts of meat. Fatty meats are generally more expensive to cook. Therefore, choose the leanest cuts. The most commonly used cuts include flank steak, tenderloin and top round steaks. These cuts are very low-fat and high in proteins.
  5. Try new recipes - Don't be afraid to try new things! It's possible to reduce grocery expenses by cooking new recipes using ingredients you've never tried before. You might be amazed at the delicious recipes you can create with fresh tomatoes and onions, garlic, olive oils, and spices.
  6. Use leftovers to create new recipes. For quick lunches, leftover meat can be used to make dinners.
