There are ethical and environmental reasons to choose organic meat. But is it actually healthier?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is organic food important

Organic produce is vital for our health. Organic produce is the best way to eat healthy foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.

Organic farming uses natural methods for growing crops without using harmful chemicals. This means fewer environmental pollutants, making it safer for humans and animals. Organic food is a way to help the environment and protect yourself.

Organic food has many benefits that go beyond health. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. It means that organic fruits, vegetables and other foods are fresher tasting, more vibrant and last longer.

It's because organic is healthy for you and the planet. Organic food is not only healthier for you but also for the whole world.

Does organic mean that it is not sprayed with pesticides?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means that organic food is not exposed to pesticides or fertilizers.

Organic produce also contains more nutrients than conventionally produced foods because it contains no harmful additives.

The USDA National Organic Program, (NOP), requires farmers to adhere to strict guidelines when cultivating organic crops.

These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotating, pest control and water conservation.

Organic farming techniques also contribute to healthy ecosystems that benefit wildlife as well as natural habitats.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is produced without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.

Organic farming practices help maintain soil quality and reduce erosion. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.

What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.
