Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top organic products?

Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.

The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How do I know if my produce is organic?

These three labels are essential if you want to be certain that you are purchasing organic produce.

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free Range – Produced from animals that live outdoors and graze on grasses or herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets certain criteria.

  • No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • The animal is never given antibiotics
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage effluent
  • GMOs are not allowed
  • There have never been any antibiotics given.
  • No hormones ever given
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
  • No irradiation

How do you determine if food has been grown organically?

If you ask any chef, he'll tell you there's nothing more important than fresh ingredients. We feel better when our food is good.

The same applies to our food. When we buy organics, we know exactly where it came from and how it was grown. We also know that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic food is produced without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.

Growing organic crops is an art. There are plenty of ways to grow them safely.

Organic farming is often called sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.

Organic farming practices include crop rotations and cover crops, manure composting, intercropping, and cover cropping. These techniques reduce soil erosion and increase water quality.

They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.

Two types of organic product certification programs exist. One is certified by the USDA National Organic Program, and the other is certified by independent certifying agencies. Both require strict adherence of organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals may be used to identify organic products that meet federal standards.

Are there any negatives to buying organic goods?

Organic food has numerous benefits. However, organic foods have their drawbacks. These include higher consumer prices, lower quality standards, and fewer choices.

It's okay to want more variety in grocery shopping. But we've been programmed to expect cheap food that tastes terrible. This is why most grocery stores stock identical prepackaged products.

Organic food is increasingly becoming popular, thanks to the fact that it has better nutrition and tastes amazing. So how do you convince people it's worth paying a little extra?

It's possible to tell them that organic food is more expensive. Organic food tastes better, but that doesn't make it any less expensive. They might be suspicious of your motives.

It is better to emphasize its positive aspects. Organic food is healthier and contains less pesticides, antibiotics, and it has higher nutritional content. Organic food is also grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or herbicides. This makes it healthier for our bodies and the environment.

Organic food is often avoided by people who think it's too expensive. But if they think about the health benefits, it may be worth spending a few bucks per week.

Organic food tastes great because it is made according to strict guidelines. It tends also to retain more vitamins and minerals.

Organic food tastes better because it is picked later in the season. This makes organic food fresher and easier for you to digest.

Organic food is usually cheaper than conventional food because it is grown organically by farmers, which means that they use less fertilizer and labour.
