Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic fruit?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are also richer in nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and omega-3 fat acids. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are free of harmful chemicals and sewage sludge.

Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.

According to the USDA, "organic" means that crops are raised in compliance with federal standards. Farmers cannot use conventional (non-organic) methods to grow these foods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

Further, the farmer must be careful about the amount of pesticide and fertilizer he uses in the growing season. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

All the above requirements are met by vegetables and fruits that are labeled "100% Organic". But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

How do I find out if my produce's organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified: Produces certified by USDA as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.

Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • There are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are not given antibiotics.
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage solids
  • GMOs not allowed
  • No antibiotics ever given
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
  • No irradiation

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

What is organic meat?

Organic meat refers to real food grown without the use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or hormones. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. When we eat organic foods, we reduce the pollution in landfills, rivers, lakes, etc. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

Buy organic meats whenever possible. This is the best way for you to eat healthy, organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass down savings to customers when they shop locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

Why should organic be my first choice?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

What is an organic food processor?

Organic food producers use organic methods to grow their products. These foods include fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

Organic food production occurs on farms that have their crops grown naturally. This includes soil preparation, pest control, and crop rotation.

To be organic, an agricultural product must meet the strict criteria of USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

These guidelines will ensure that consumers have safe, healthy, and nutritious food.

Organic foods offer many health benefits. They are free from heavy metal contamination and pesticide residues. They also have higher nutritional content and better taste.

USDA Certified Organic products must be labeled with the seal "USDA certified organic".

This certification indicates that the product meets the requirements of the National Organic Program.

As well as ensuring that we eat healthier, organic food also helps protect our environment.

Organic farming methods help conserve natural resources like water and land. Organic farming also helps to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, which are responsible for climate change.

Organic agriculture uses fewer chemical inputs and pollutes less.

Because of this, harmful gases such as ammonia and even nitrates will not build up in the air.

There are many forms of organic farming.

Conventional farming is the use of synthetic inputs like pesticides or fertilizers.

Regenerative agriculture uses cover crops and green manures to improve soil quality. It encourages biodiversity.

Agroecology concentrates on the sustainable relationship between people, plants and animals.

Permaculture promotes self sufficiency through the creation of systems that imitate nature.

How To

What happens to the body when you switch over to organic products

Organic products can be grown without synthetic fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product was created by nature, and therefore does not contain harmful substances.

The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are often fresher than others because they haven't been treated with heat, radiation, or chemical preservatives. Natural doesn't necessarily have to be healthy, however. Experts believe there is no difference in organic and conventional food. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce has less pesticide residues and pollutant than conventionally grown food.

Most grocery stores offer organic options. For organic meats, poultry, eggs and seafood, you should check with your local supermarket. Some companies offer only organic products while others have separate sections. You should look for USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified (Biodynamic Association Certified), Rainforest Alliance Certified, and other certifications.

These products should not be consumed if you are pregnant. Pesticides have been shown to harm infants and unborn babies.
