Frequently Asked Questions

What is organic meat?

Organic meat is real food grown without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or hormones. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are healthier for our environment. When we eat organic foods, we reduce the pollution in landfills, rivers, lakes, etc. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass on savings to customers shopping locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.

What's the difference?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How can I tell if my produce has been certified organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.

Pastured/Free Range – Produced from animals that live outdoors and graze on grasses or herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • Animals are not ever given hormones.
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • There is no sewage sludge
  • No GMOs
  • There have never been any antibiotics given.
  • No hormones ever given
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage effluent (if it isn't a GMO).
  • No irradiation

How do you know if your food is organic?

Ask any chef and he will tell you that fresh ingredients are the most important thing. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.

The same is true of our food. When we buy organics, we know exactly where it came from and how it was grown. We also know that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic foods are produced without using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified organisms (GMO). These substances are not allowed for organic farmers.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many ways to safely grow organic crops.

Organic farming is often called sustainable agriculture. This means that organic farming does not use as many resources as conventional methods, but it still provides the essential nutrients needed to sustain life.

Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These practices help to prevent soil erosion and improve water purity.

They also reduce chemical runoff into waterways. Because most people live in urban areas, it is easy to find farms that grow organic produce.

Two types of organic product certification programs exist. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict organic standards to be adhered to.

USDA seals or O Seals can be applied to organic products. This symbol indicates that the product meets federal requirements.

Why is organic produce important?

Organic produce is vital for our health. It is the best way for us to eat healthy food. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.

Organic farming is a natural method of growing crops that uses no harmful chemicals. This makes organic farming safer for both humans and animals. When you choose organic food, both you and the earth are protected.

The benefits of organic food go beyond our health, though. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. But did you know that most organic fruits and vegetables aren't treated with chemical spray either? They taste fresher, look better and last longer.

Because of this, organic foods are so important. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

What are the top organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

However, they are also more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.

The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

Statistics

  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. Groceries sales increased by 12 per cent during this time. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
