Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?
Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiated foods are those that have been exposed to radiation. Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are created using biological engineering techniques.
The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. But natural does not necessarily imply organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.
Do organic foods offer health benefits?
Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. However, regular consumption of organic foods can have health benefits.
Organic food is free from artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides as well as hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Organic produce is produced without the use of harmful chemicals which could affect human health.
Also, there are fewer additives that are used in processing. Organic products are more nutritious than those made from non-organic ingredients.
Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.
Organic farming methods are more expensive than conventional methods but they can often produce better results. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps prevent erosion and conserve water. Plus, because organic farms aren't treated with toxic chemicals, these farms typically require less energy and fuel.
Many people are concerned that organic food is more expensive than regular foods. Prices will vary depending where you live. Organic apples, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive that conventional apples.
However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.
Should you buy organic?
It all depends upon who you are. If organic food doesn't appeal to you, you shouldn't bother.
Organic food is available if you are a fan of good food. And since most commercial growers use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), organic foods are safer for consumers.
Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.
What should I look out for when buying organic products?
USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.
Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.
Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.
What is an Organic Food Producer?
Organic food producers grow organic products without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits, veggies, grains, and dairy goods.
When crops are naturally nurtured, organic food production can be achieved. This includes soil preparation, crop rotation, and pest management.
To be organic, an agricultural product must meet the strict criteria of USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).
These guidelines will ensure that consumers have safe, healthy, and nutritious food.
The benefits of eating organic range from lower levels of pesticide residues and heavy metal contamination to higher nutrient content and better flavour.
Products certified organic by the USDA must bear the label "USDA Certified Organic" seal.
This certification means that the product meets the standards laid down by the National Organic Program.
As well as ensuring that we eat healthier, organic food also helps protect our environment.
Organic farming techniques preserve water and land. Organic methods also reduce greenhouse gas emissions that can cause climate change.
Organic agriculture uses fewer chemicals, and less pollution runoff.
Because harmful gases such as ammonia or nitrates are less likely in the atmosphere, it also improves air quality.
There are many types of organic farming, including conventional, regenerative, agroecological, and permaculture.
Conventional agriculture refers to the use synthetic inputs, such as pesticides/fertilizers.
Regenerative farming is the use of compost, cover crops, or green manures to improve soil health. It also promotes biodiversity.
Agroecology is concerned with sustainable relationships between humans, plants, animals, and the environment.
Permaculture encourages self-sufficiency by creating systems that are similar to nature.
Is organic meat better?
If you have been paying attention for long enough, you will probably know the answer. However, the truth is organic food is gaining popularity at a time when conventional food is falling out of favor.
Organic foods continue to be popular because they offer a healthier alternative. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.
However, there are also two sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow, and it requires more resources. This means that organic food costs more money than its non-organic counterpart.
Organic meats will typically be more expensive than those that are raised in conventional conditions. But, you can reduce the cost of organic meats without compromising quality.
One way to save money is to buy locally. Buy locally grown vegetables and fruits to help keep prices low. Farmers receive incentives to grow healthier crops.
A great way to save money is to search for deals. Organics often come with discounts.
Another way to save money? Eat less meat. Because of the amount of feed required to raise livestock, meat production can become expensive.
There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.
What are some organic skin products?
Organic skincare products contain no synthetic chemicals, including parabens. Phthalates, mineral oil. Petroleum jelly. Propylene glycol. sodium lauryl.sulphate. Talc. triclosan. Titanium dioxide. triethanolamine. vitamin A palmitate.
Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
They are also formulated to help maintain healthy skin, prevent premature aging, promote healing after injury, and support overall well-being.

- Certified Organic refers to ingredients that were grown using methods that protect soil, water, air, wildlife and farmers.
Statistics
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
- Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To
Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?
Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.
Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
