Frequently Asked Questions
What are organic fruits and vegetables?
Organic food is free from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and hormones. They are also richer in nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and omega-3 fat acids. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.
Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.
Although organics are most commonly associated with produce, organics can also be found in dairy, meats, poultry, eggs and baked goods.
"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.
Additionally, the farmer must adhere to guidelines concerning the amount of fertilizer and pesticide that he uses during the growing seasons and how he rotates his fields among various crops. GMOs, artificial growthhormones, synthetic insecticides, and synthetic fertilizers cannot be used by farmers.
Produces labelled as 100% organic meet all requirements. But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will label the product as "made from organic ingredients". "
What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?
Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).
"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. Natural does not always mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.
Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
Are organic foods healthier?
According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.
Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
Statistics
- Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
- Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To
What happens to your body if you switch to organic products
Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. The term "organic" means they do not contain any chemicals or additives. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.
Natural means how food is grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. Natural doesn't necessarily have to be healthy, however. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types of food have been tested for safety and quality. Organic produce contains fewer pesticide and other pollutants than conventionally-grown produce.
In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. Organic meat, poultry or eggs can be found at most local markets. Some companies only sell organic products, while others offer separate sections. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides can harm unborn infants and babies.
