The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.
Does organic mean it is pesticide-free?
Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means that organic food is not exposed to pesticides or fertilizers.
Because it is free from harmful additives, organic produce has higher nutritional value than conventionally produced food.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), requires that farmers follow strict guidelines when growing organic crops.
These guidelines address soil preparation, crop rotations, pest control, water conservation, harvesting, and other practices.
Organic farming methods also benefit wildlife and natural environments.
What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?
USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.
When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.
In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Groceries sales increased by 12 per cent during this time. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.
While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.
While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.
The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
