What are organic fruits?
Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are also richer in nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and omega-3 fat acids. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.
Organic foods are produced with sustainable farming practices that promote soil quality and biological diversity. They are produced without harmful chemicals, irradiation, or sewage sludge.
Organics are often associated with produce. However, organic products can include dairy, meat, poultry and eggs as well as personal care items and pet food.
"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. Farmers cannot use conventional (non-organic) methods to grow these foods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.
A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.
Produces labelled as 100% organic meet all requirements. But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "
Why should you buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.
Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.
USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.
Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."
Be sure to read all ingredient labels. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.
Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.
Are organic foods better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.

5 Reasons You Should Buy Organic Products
Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or irradiated ingredients. Their production does not use sewage sludge and industrial solvents. During the growth process, food is kept clean from any contamination. It is free of preservatives as well as artificial additives. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics. They are also grown in conditions that ensure they retain their nutritional value for longer periods of time.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce has more chemicals than organic. Organic produce is healthier. This means it's less likely to cause allergies and sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizer requires very little water. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. This helps to reduce air pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming relies more on soil fertility than chemical fertilizers. This results is healthier soils with higher organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. Farm animals develop strong immune systems when they eat only grasses/grains raised without adding hormones or antibiotics.
- Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Organic produce tastes sweeter and more rich because it was picked when it was still young.
- Nutrition. GMOs, BPA, and other harmful chemicals are often found in conventional processed foods. If you want to avoid these, stick to whole foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, beans, fruit, veggies, and herbs.
