Frequently Asked Questions

How can you tell organic food from non-organic?

Fresh ingredients are what chefs value the most. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.

This is true for food as well. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. We also know it was not treated using harmful chemicals.

Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. You have many options to safely grow them.

Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. This means that organic farming does not use as many resources as conventional methods, but it still provides the essential nutrients needed to sustain life.

Crop rotation, crop rotation, cover cropping and composting manure are all organic farming methods. These techniques reduce soil erosion and increase water quality.

They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.

There are two types of certification programs for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict compliance with organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals are symbols that indicate organic certification.

What is the difference between organic food and inorganic?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices improve soil health and water quality as well as animal welfare.

Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

Why should you buy organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Check ingredient lists carefully. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

How To

What you should know about organic food

Organic foods are produced from plants and animals that have been grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other additives. They are not subject to genetic engineering or the use of ionizing radioactive radiation. The food must not contain artificial flavours, colours, flavour enhancements, or preservatives. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. Organic refers to products that only contain naturally occurring substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, which are all found in nature.

Globally, organic product consumption has increased significantly over the last decade. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This percentage continues to rise and is projected to increase by 70%, 80%, or 90% by 2020.

There are many reasons that organic products are chosen by consumers. Organic produce can be preferred for its taste; others prefer them for being healthier. Some people believe organic farming to be more environmentally friendly. There are ethical concerns regarding farm workers and animals. This is why some people choose organic products.

Although organic foods tend to be more expensive than regular ones, prices can vary depending on where they are located. There are different factors influencing the price of organic food. One factor is whether there are enough land available for organic farming. Another is the cost of inputs and labour needed for organic cultivation. Other factors include transportation costs, marketing costs, and taxes. For example, in Europe, the average price of organic food is 10% higher than the regular price.

Below are the main differences between conventional and organic foods.

  • Organic produce is completely free from chemicals, hormones and antibiotics.
  • Organic livestock is fed grasses and grains, rather than corn and soya meal.
  • Organic milk is produced by cows who eat a diet consisting of pasture grasses and hay.
  • All raw materials used in organic manufacturing processes are certified organic.
  • Organic fruits and vegetables are not allowed to be grown or processed with pesticides.
  • No irradiation is used in organic meat, poultry, or seafood.
  • You should soak raw nuts and seeds before you use them.
  • Organic cooking only uses healthy oils.
  • Organic eggs are laid outdoors by hens.
  • Organic honey is extracted by bees using traditional methods.
  • Organic chocolate uses sugar and beans that have been grown and processed organically.
  • Organic wines do not contain any chemical additives.
