Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic food products?

Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.

Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. Organics have more nutrients than traditional food, which makes them better for our health. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified - Produce certified by the USDA as being 100% organic.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
  • There are no genetically modified organisms
  • No antibiotics are ever given to the animal
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage effluent
  • No GMOs
  • There have never been any antibiotics given.
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drug
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge (if it's a non-GMO)
  • No irradiation

What's the difference?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices improve soil health and water quality as well as animal welfare.

Inorganic food is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

What are organic fruits?

Organic foods are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, or antibiotics. Organic foods also have more nutrients such as vitamins C, E and K plus omega-3 fatty acid. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are grown using sustainable farming practices that preserve soil quality and encourage biological diversity. They are free from harmful chemicals, radiation, and sewage sludge.

Organics are often associated with produce. However, organic products can include dairy, meat, poultry and eggs as well as personal care items and pet food.

According to the USDA, "organic" means that crops are raised in compliance with federal standards. These foods cannot be grown by farmers using conventional methods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

In addition, the farmer must follow guidelines regarding how much fertilizer and pesticide he uses during the growing season and rotate his fields between various crops. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

Produces labelled as 100% organic meet all requirements. But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and genetic manipulation. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. Organic products are those that do not contain chemicals or other additives. This product is natural and does not contain any harmful substances.

The term "natural" refers to how food is grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Experts believe there is no difference in organic and conventional food. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies offer only organic products while others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified. Biodynamic Association Certified. Rainforest Alliance Certified.

These foods should be avoided by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
