What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.
