Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I go organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Is organic food healthy?

There are two types: foods that we grow and those that we purchase from others. Although there are exceptions to each category, most of the answers to your question are yes. Organic food is healthier because it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

In supermarkets all over North America, Europe Asia, Latin America, Latin America, and Africa, you can find organic food. Organic food is now available in most grocery stores, making it easier to find organic foods.

Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics are often grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This means that they do not pollute the soil and water sources.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices and requires farmers to follow strict guidelines to ensure that organic produce is safe to eat. There are currently over 30 million acres of US farmland certified as organic.

Organic food is often less expensive than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms are free to charge less for their crops, as they don't need to pay expensive chemical inputs such insecticides orfungicides.

According to the Environmental Working Group Organic food is actually 10 percent more expensive per pound than conventionally grown food. You can make a change to organic food if your family is concerned about their health.

Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. Although many may think that organic food is only available at specialty markets and gourmet restaurants, this isn't true. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.

Organic food sales have increased significantly in recent years. In the US, organic food sales reached $43Billion in 2012, an increase of $21Billion in 2007.

Why is organic food important

Our health is dependent on organic produce. It is the best option to ensure that we eat nutritious food. It is healthier for us than any pesticides or fertilizers and it is also more eco-friendly.

Organic farming is a natural method of growing crops that uses no harmful chemicals. This reduces the risk of environmental pollution, which makes it safer for people and animals. By choosing organic food, you are protecting the planet as well as yourself.

But organic food offers more than just health benefits. We all know how toxic processed food can make you feel. But did you know that most organic fruits and vegetables aren't treated with chemical spray either? That means that they taste fresher, look brighter and last longer too.

It's because organic is healthy for you and the planet. Because it's not only healthy for you, it's healthier for the world.

What are the most popular organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used. Animal testing is also not done. These crops can be grown naturally by farmers, and they don't need to be treated with chemicals to control pests or weeds.

Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic products tend to be higher in fiber and lower fat than conventionally produced foods.

How To

What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?

Organic products are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and genetic manipulation. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. Organic products are those that do not contain chemicals or other additives. This product was produced by nature and therefore contains no harmful substances.

The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts believe there is no difference in organic and conventional food. Both types have been tested for quality and safety. Organic produce contains fewer pesticide and other pollutants than conventionally-grown produce.

Most grocery shops now carry organic options. Organic meat, poultry or eggs can be found at most local markets. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. You should look for USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified (Biodynamic Association Certified), Rainforest Alliance Certified, and other certifications.

These products should not be consumed if you are pregnant. Unborn babies and infants can be affected by pesticides.
