Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic foods do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They contain more nutrients such vitamins A, C. E, and, in some cases, omega-3 oils. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are grown using sustainable farming practices that preserve soil quality and encourage biological diversity. They are produced without harmful chemicals, irradiation, or sewage sludge.

While most consumers associate organics with produce, many organic products include dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, personal care items, pet food, and household cleaning supplies.

"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.

The requirements for organic fruits and vegetables are met if they are labeled 100 percent organic. Some farms don't label their products 100% organic, as it could confuse consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

What are organic products good for skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products do not contain artificial colours, fragrances or preservatives.

They also have the ability to support healthy skin, prevent premature ageing, promote healing after injuries and overall well-being.

Here are some common terms you might encounter when searching for organic products

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

Why should I buy organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

What is an inorganic food?

Organic food does not use pesticides or fertilizers. These chemicals could cause health problems for those who eat inorganic food.

Organic food is grown naturally without harmful substances such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Inorganic food is meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, including butter, yogurts honey, yogurts, butter, cream, cheese, butter, yogurts, honey and grains.

Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. Organic farming employs natural methods and soil amendments for growing crops. Conventional agriculture uses pesticides or fertilizers.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. According to the National Organic Program Standards, all certified organic food must be free from prohibited materials such as antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and industrial solvents. Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.

How can you tell if your produce is organic?

These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.

Pastured/Free Range - Produce from animals who live outdoors and graze freely on grass and herbs.

These labels indicate whether the product meets certain criteria.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to eat healthily. Sometimes, you have to use your creativity to save money while still eating well. Here's my list to help you keep food costs low while still enjoying all the health benefits of organic meat.

  1. Wholesale clubs - Sams Club, Costco, and Sams Club offer great deals on bulk foods like chicken breasts. If you're lucky enough to live near one of these stores, you can often get deals on large quantities of meat (up to 50 pounds). This way, you won't waste any meat. If you buy it in bulk you can freeze it so it lasts more.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. Amazon, for example, offers Prime Pantry, a weekly deal that includes free shipping on orders greater than $35 There are discounts on roasts, ground beef and lamb steaks as well as pork loins. It is easy to browse their website and check out what is on offer at different times.
  3. Find a local farmer - Local farmers usually charge less than big box retailers because they do not pay considerable fees to stock their shelves. Local farmers also know exactly what their animals have eaten and drank so they can determine what's in their bodies.
  4. Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. Therefore, choose the leanest cuts. The most popular cuts are flank steak, sirloin steak and tenderloin roast. These cuts are high in protein and low in fat.
  5. Try new recipes. Cooking with new ingredients is one of the best ways to cut your grocery bills. You might be amazed at the delicious recipes you can create with fresh tomatoes and onions, garlic, olive oils, and spices.
  6. Remaining meat and poultry can be used for sandwiches, salads or soups. Remaining meat can be used for quick lunches or dinners.
