The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.

Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.

This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.


What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

Here are my tips for finding cheap organic meats. I'll also tell you how much each pound costs. This will teach you how to get the most out of your purchase.

Healthy eating doesn't require you to spend a lot. Sometimes it takes creativity to save money and eat well. Here's my list to help you keep food costs low while still enjoying all the health benefits of organic meat.

  1. Shop at wholesale clubs - Sams Club or Costco are great places to buy bulk foods such as chicken breasts and pork chops. If you are fortunate enough to live near one, you may be able get discounts up to 50 lbs on large quantities. This way, you won't waste any meat. If you buy it in bulk you can freeze it so it lasts more.
  2. You can shop online for meat at great prices. Amazon offers Prime Pantry weekly deals, including free shipping for orders above $35 They offer discounts on beef roasts, ground beef, lamb steaks, and pork loins. You can browse their website and view what's on sale at different times.
  3. Locate a farmer in your area. Local farmers are usually cheaper than big box retailers as they don’t pay high stocking fees. They also know what their animals ate and drink so they can tell exactly what is inside.
  4. Look for lean cuts of meat. Fatty meats are generally more expensive to cook. So, look for the leanest cuts. The most popular are sirloin or flank steak, tenderloin roasts, top round steak, and top roast steak. These cuts are very low in fat and high in protein.
  5. Explore new recipes. Don't be afraid of trying new things. One of the easiest ways to reduce your grocery bill is to start cooking meals with ingredients you haven't used before.
