Frequently Asked Questions

Which organic products are most in demand?

Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer and better for the environment. They also make it more affordable for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.

These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.

Are organic foods healthier?

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.

Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

Why is organic foods important?

Our health is dependent on organic produce. It's the best way to ensure we eat nutritious foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.

Organic farming is a natural method of growing crops that uses no harmful chemicals. Organic farming is safer for animals and humans because it produces fewer pollutants. Organic food is a way to help the environment and protect yourself.

Organic food has many benefits that go beyond health. We all know how toxic processed food can make you feel. Organic fruits and vegetables aren’t subject to chemicals spray. This means they are more fresh tasting, last longer and look better.

This is why organic food is so important. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

What is an organic food producer?

Organic food producers grow organic products without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits as well vegetables, grains and dairy products.

Organic food production occurs on farms that have their crops grown naturally. This includes crop rotation, soil preparation, and pest control.

The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), must set strict criteria for organic agricultural products.

These guidelines make it possible for consumers to have safe, healthy, and delicious food.

The benefits of eating organic range from lower levels of pesticide residues and heavy metal contamination to higher nutrient content and better flavour.

USDA organic products must carry the USDA Certified Organic seal.

This certification signifies that the product meets all standards set by the National Organic Program.

Organic food not only makes us healthier but also helps to protect the environment.

Organic farming methods help conserve natural resources like water and land. In addition, organic methods reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which cause climate change.

Organic agriculture uses fewer chemical inputs and pollutes less.

Because harmful gases such as ammonia or nitrates are less likely in the atmosphere, it also improves air quality.

There are many types to organic farming.

Conventional farming uses synthetic inputs such pesticides and fertilizers.

Regenerative farming includes compost, cover crops, as well as green manures that improve soil health. It encourages biodiversity.

Agroecology focuses on sustainable relationships between people, plants, and animals.

Permaculture promotes self sufficiency through the creation of systems that imitate nature.

Why should I go organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural conditions and without the use of any artificial inputs like fungicides or herbicides. Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. This represents a 23-percent increase over 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
