Each choice task was first provided without any social or environmental information, and then again after a specific information treatment: an overall score that assessed the housing system used to produce the egg (cage, enriched, or free run), and a nutritional score.

All of the responses were analyzed to see if these two pieces of information shifted choices. Fortunately, the results showed that participants were very consistent with their initial choices when the additional information was revealed.

Egg certification schemes differ, but in general, the free-range label indicates that hens are allowed to roam inside their houses and have access to outdoor space. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.

Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
