Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?
Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).
Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.
Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
How do I find out if my produce's organic?
These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.
USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.
Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.
Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.
These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.
- No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
- There are no genetically modified organisms
- The animal is never given antibiotics
- Animals never receive hormones
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- No sewage sludge
- GMOs prohibited
- No antibiotics ever given
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No sewage sludge (if it's a non-GMO)
- No irradiation

Are organic foods healthier?
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.
Statistics
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
- To provide the highest quality products and services to every customer, with a dedicated workforce that puts the customer first and takes the extra step to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and loyalty. (hollinsorganic.com)
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To
5 Reasons to buy organic products
Organic foods are grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or irradiated ingredients. Their production methods do not involve sewage sludge or industrial solvents. During the course of its growth cycle, the natural environment of the food is protected from contamination. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. No hormones or antibiotics are used. In addition, they are produced under conditions that allow them to retain their nutritional value and freshness for longer periods.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce is more chemically-laden than organic. This means it's less likely to cause allergies and sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Organic farms are often located far from areas with high levels of pollution because it takes so much energy for conventional agriculture to grow. This helps to reduce the amount of air pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. Rotating crops and allowing the soil to rest between harvests improves soil health. Strong immune systems are developed when farm animals only eat grasses and grains that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
- Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Organic produce tastes sweeter and more rich because it was picked when it was still young.
- Nutrition. Many conventional processed foods contain harmful substances like BPA and GMOs. These harmful substances can be avoided by sticking to whole foods like meat, eggs, fish and nuts as well as seeds, beans, fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
