Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. The National Organic Program Standards require that all organic foods are free of prohibited substances such as antibiotics and growth hormones, genetically modified organisms or industrial solvents. Additionally, organic food must be raised without toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers, sewage sludges, or ionizing radiation.

Are there health benefits to eating organic food?

Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides herbicides fungicides hormones antibiotics or genetic engineering. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.

Although organic farming methods tend to cost more than conventional farming methods, they often yield better results. When farmers grow crops organically, they encourage soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps conserve water resources and protects against erosion. Organic farms also require less energy and fuel, as they aren't treated using toxic chemicals.

Some people fear that organic foods can be more costly than conventional foods. Prices can vary depending on where you live. For example, organic apples can be more costly than conventional apples.

However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.

So, should you buy organic?

It depends on you. You shouldn't bother if you don't enjoy organic food.

However, if you enjoy good-tasting food, you can buy organic food. Organic foods are safer as most commercial growers use chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified species (GMOs) to produce their crops.

Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.

How To

Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
