Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic products good for skin?

Organic skincare products are made without synthetic chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, talc, triclosan, titanium dioxide, triethanolamine, vitamin A palmitate, etc.

Organic skincare products can be free of artificial colours and fragrances as well as preservatives, emulsifiers GMOs, Petrochemicals, animal testing (except for cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides hormones, antibiotics, heavy metallics and other contaminants.

They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.

Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:

  • Paraben Free is a grouping of chemicals that are used to maintain certain cosmetic products safe, but can be toxic when consumed in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free means that the product doesn't contain any essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
  • Vegetarian/Vegetarian- The ingredients are either vegan/vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free: This is when gluten was eliminated from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic: The product does not contain toxic substances, carcinogens or any other harmful compounds that could cause harm to your health.
  • Biodegradable means that the product can be thrown away as it will become harmless components.
  • Pesticide-Free – No pesticides were used in the growing or harvesting of crops.
  • GMO-Free is a declaration that the product does not contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic is a certification that the ingredients of the recipe were grown using sustainable methods.

Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.

Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

How do you know if your food is organic?

Fresh ingredients are what chefs value the most. We feel better when our food is good.

The same is true of our food. When we buy organics, we know exactly where it came from and how it was grown. We also know it was not treated using harmful chemicals.

Organic foods can be made without synthetic pesticides. Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many safe ways to grow them.

Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.

Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These techniques help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.

They also reduce chemical runoff into waterways. Since most of us live in urban areas, we can find local farms that raise organic produce.

There are two types certified programs for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict adherence to organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals are symbols that indicate organic certification.

Which organic products are most in demand?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. The Organic Food Index was created to address this. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.

The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.

This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

What's the difference?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

Are organic foods healthy?

There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is healthier than conventional food because it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, pesticides or herbicides. It also doesn’t contain preservatives or genetically modified organisms.

In supermarkets all over North America, Europe Asia, Latin America, Latin America, and Africa, you can find organic food. Organic food is now available in most grocery stores, making it easier to find organic foods.

Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics are grown without using pesticides and fertilizers. They also don't pollute soil or water.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices and requires farmers to follow strict guidelines to ensure that organic produce is safe to eat. There are over 30 million acres of US organic farmland.

Organic food is often less expensive than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms are able to charge lower prices for their crops because they don't have to purchase expensive chemical inputs like insecticides and fungicides.

In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, organic food costs 10 percent less per pound than conventionally produced food. Switching to organic food is a smart move if you care about your health and that of your family.

Organic food has become a popular alternative to standard American diets. While many believe organic food can only come from specialty markets and fine dining restaurants, it is not true. Organic food is easily available in all regular grocery stores in the United States.

Organic food sales have increased significantly in recent years. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
