What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices improve soil health and water quality as well as animal welfare.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.


What is organic beef?

Organic meat is organic food that has been grown naturally without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or hormones. This also means that animals weren't given any genetically modified feed. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.

Organic meats are healthier for our environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.

It is best to buy organic meats locally as much as possible. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass along savings to customers when shopping locally. Shopping locally helps to keep American workers employed, as opposed to sending them overseas.


What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.


Is organic food better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.
