Frequently Asked Questions
What are the top organic products?
The fastest-growing industry is organic food. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.
What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?
Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).
The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.
What is organic food?
Organic food is grown without pesticides and artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can cause health problems in organic foods.
Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals may cause damage to animals as well as humans.
Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.
Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must set strict guidelines for organic foods. All organic food must comply with the National Organic Program Standards. This means that it must not contain prohibited materials like antibiotics, growth hormones or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as industrial solvents. Organic food must be grown without the use of toxic chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers.
What are organic food products?
Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used. Animal testing is also not done. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.
Organic farming practices can also preserve soil quality by reducing erosion, and conserving water resources. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.

How To
What happens to your body if you switch to organic products
Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was created by nature, and therefore does not contain harmful substances.
The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are often more fresh than others, because they haven’t been processed with heat, radiation or chemical preservations. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce contains fewer pesticide and other pollutants than conventionally-grown produce.
Most grocery stores offer organic options. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.
You should avoid eating these items if you are pregnant or nursing. Pesticides can harm unborn infants and babies.
