Frequently Asked Questions
What are some of the most popular organic products in your country?
Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.
They also tend to have higher prices. The Organic Food Index was created to address this. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.
This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.
However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

What are the benefits to organic farming?
Organic farming is a way for farmers to grow food naturally without the use chemicals. Farmers do not need to worry about harmful pesticides harming their crops or animals.
Organic farming also permits for the use of natural fertilizers. These fertilizers promote healthy plants and decrease the amount of chemicals used.
Organic farming is also eco-friendly. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This reduces the risk of pollution and helps conserve precious resources.
Organic farming can increase crop yields and help the environment. This is because organic farming requires less water to grow the crops.
Organic production also means that farmers get higher prices for their products. Consumers who become more aware of the dangers of pesticides and chemical fertilizers demand healthier foods.
This leads to a greater demand for organic food products. Organic farming has become increasingly popular.

Organic food must be grown without the use of toxic chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers.
How do you determine if food has been grown organically?
If you ask any chef, he'll tell you there's nothing more important than fresh ingredients. It's because we feel better when food is well-prepared.

They also reduce chemical pollution of waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.

How To
Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.
Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.
For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
