Frequently Asked Questions
What is organic food?
Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.
Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.
What are the most popular organic products?
Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products will be the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.
What is organic meat?
Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Organic meat is also a guarantee that the animals weren’t fed any genetically altered feed. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.
Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. Organic foods reduce pollution in rivers, lakes and landfills. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.
Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass on savings to customers shopping locally. Buy local to save jobs and not send them overseas.

What you need to know about organic foods
Organic foods are plants and animals grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or additives. They are not subject to genetic engineering or the use of ionizing radioactive radiation. The food must contain no artificial ingredients, colourings, flavour enhancers, or preservatives. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
When Justus von Liebig, a chemical chemist, coined "organic", which means "life-giving," to describe the properties in manure, the term "organic" was used for the first time. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.
Over the past decade, organic products have seen a dramatic increase in consumption. According to statistics, approximately 50% of the world’s population consumes at minimum one organic product each day. This number is rising and is expected increase to 70%, 90%, and 80% by 2020.
There are many reasons consumers choose organic products. Some prefer the flavor, while others prefer them because they are healthier. Others also believe organic farming makes it more sustainable. However, there are also ethical concerns regarding the treatment of farm workers and animals, which is why some consumers opt for non-organic products.
While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. One factor is whether there are enough land available for organic farming. Another factor is the price of inputs as well as labour for organic farming. Transport costs, marketing costs and taxes are also important. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.
