Frequently Asked Questions

Are organic foods better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.

Pastured/Free Range – Produced from animals that live outdoors and graze on grasses or herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are not given antibiotics.
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage solids
  • GMOs not allowed
  • There have never been any antibiotics given.
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage solids (if it's not GMO).
  • No irradiation

Is organic produce healthy?

There are two types of foods; those we grow ourselves and those we buy from someone else. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.

In supermarkets all over North America, Europe Asia, Latin America, Latin America, and Africa, you can find organic food. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.

Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics can be grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This ensures that organics do not pollute our soil or water supply.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices. It requires that farmers follow strict guidelines in order to ensure organic produce is safe for consumption. There are currently more than 30,000,000 acres of US farmland which have been designated organic.

Organic food can often be cheaper than conventional food. The same amount of nutrients, calories, and protein is being offered by organic food, but consumers are often paying less. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.

According to Environmental Working Group, organic food can be 10 percent cheaper per pound when compared to conventionally produced food. Organic food is an option if you want to improve your health and the health of your family.

Organic food has become a popular alternative to standard American diets. Organic food is not only available in gourmet restaurants and specialty markets, as many people may believe. You can easily purchase organic food in regular grocery stores throughout the United States.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in organic food sales. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." But natural does not necessarily imply organic. You may also find products that are labeled as "natural", which could contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

Statistics

  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
