Frequently Asked Questions
Is organic the same as pesticide-free?
Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means there is little or no exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides.
Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.
The USDA National Organic Program requires that organic farming practices be followed by farmers.
These guidelines include soil preparation and crop rotation, pest management, water conservation, as well as harvesting practices.
Organic farming also promotes healthy ecosystems which are beneficial to wildlife and natural habitats.
What are my top priorities when buying organic products
USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.
When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.
What are the benefits of organic products for skin?
Organic skincare products contain no synthetic chemicals, including parabens. Phthalates, mineral oil. Petroleum jelly. Propylene glycol. sodium lauryl.sulphate. Talc. triclosan. Titanium dioxide. triethanolamine. vitamin A palmitate.
Organic skincare products are free from artificial colours, fragrances and preservatives.
They also have the ability to support healthy skin, prevent premature ageing, promote healing after injuries and overall well-being.

- Fragrance-Free – The product does not contain essential oils or perfumes.
- Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
- Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?
Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.
Inorganic food is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.
Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
Statistics
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
- Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
- Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To
Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.
In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.
For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.
The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.
Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
