Frequently Asked Questions
What are some organic skin products?
Organic skincare products don't contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens or phthalates.
Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.
These are some of the terms that you will see when you shop for organic products
- Paraben Free - these are a group of chemicals used to keep certain cosmetic products stable, but they can be toxic if consumed in large quantities.
- Fragrance-Free - the product does not have added fragrance or essential oils.
- Cruelty Free - No animals were injured during the manufacturing process.
- Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
- Vegan/Vegetarian – The ingredients can either be vegetarian or vegan.
- Gluten-Free - This means that gluten has been removed from the formulation.
- Non-Toxic-The product doesn't contain any toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and/or other harmful substances that could be harmful to your health.
- Biodegradable: The product will be discarded as harmless components.
- Pesticide-Free – No pesticides were used in the growing or harvesting of crops.
- GMO-Free means that no ingredient in the product contains genetically modified organisms.
- Certified Organic means all ingredients were grown in ways that preserve the soil, water and air.
What's the difference?
Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices improve soil health and water quality as well as animal welfare.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).
"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
How can I determine if my produce was organic?
These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce
USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.
Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.
These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:
- No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
- No genetically altered organisms
- No antibiotics are ever given to the animal
- No hormones are ever given to the animal
- There are no growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- There is no sewage sludge
- GMOs are not allowed
- Antibiotics have never been administered
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No sewage sludge, if it's not a GMO
- No irradiation

Organic foods are better for us.
According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.
Is organic meat better?
If you've been paying attention for any time, you probably already know the answer to this question. Here's the problem: Organic food is becoming more sought-after, while traditional food continues to decline in popularity.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. Organic foods are safer for our bodies and help to reduce pollution.
But there are two sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow, and it requires more resources. This means organic food will cost more than its non-organic counterpart.
Organic meats are generally more expensive than conventionally raised animals. However, it is possible to reduce costs without compromising on quality.
Locally grown produce is a great way to save money. Buying locally grown fruits and vegetables helps keep prices low because farmers receive incentives to grow healthy crops.
Look for bargains to cut down on costs. You may be able to get discounts when you buy organics.
Another way to save money? Eat less meat. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.
There are many reasons why organic food is better for our bodies and the planet, but we should be careful not to overlook the cost.

- Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
- According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To
What you need to know about organic foods
Organic foods are made from animals and plants without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They can be produced without the use of genetic engineering or ionizing radiation. Food must not contain artificial colours, flavour enhancers or preservatives. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
In 1845, Justus von Liebig, a chemist, first coined the term "organic", meaning "life-giving", to describe the properties and characteristics of manure. The term organic is often associated with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.
Globally, organic product consumption has increased significantly over the last decade. According to recent statistics, about 50% of the global population consumes at-least one organic product every day. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.
There are many reasons why consumers choose organic products. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.
Organic foods are more expensive than those made from conventional food, though prices may vary by country and region. There are different factors influencing the price of organic food. One factor is the availability land suitable for organic agricultural. Another factor is the price of inputs as well as labour for organic farming. There are other factors such as transportation costs, marketing and taxes. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.
