Discover the Wholesome Goodness of Organic Chicken

Discover the Wholesome Goodness of Organic Chicken

When it comes to buying chicken, some people opt for organic. This is because they believe that it has a better nutritional value than regular chicken meat.

The label “organic” means that the chickens were raised without antibiotics, fed only certified organic feed and given access to the outdoors. They are also free from hormones and any genetically modified ingredients.

No Antibiotics or Hormones

As with organic milk or grass-fed beef, many consumers claim that organic chicken is healthier and tastes better than its conventional counterpart. But if you're not a connoisseur of poultry, it can be hard to tell the difference.

The labeling can be confusing, as there are multiple claims such as "free-range," "organic" and "all natural." CR's Jordan Platts says that he was convinced to buy organic chicken after watching documentaries about the chemicals used in factory farming, and found that his organic chicken was noticeably tastier.

The benefits of organic chicken include no antibiotics or hormones, 100% organic feed and a diet high in Omega-3s. However, the price tag is sometimes prohibitive for some families. Fortunately, there are options such as Misfits Market, which partners with grocery stores and farmers to save surplus food from landfills and makes it available to conscious shoppers at a reduced price.

No Pesticides or Chemicals

With so many labels at the grocery store — organic, free-range, no hormones added and made in the USA, to name a few — it's easy to get confused. What's more, organic chicken usually costs more.

While choosing organic doesn't guarantee the bird spent its days foraging for worms in the sun, it does mean farmers are not allowed to use pesticides or synthetic fertilizers on their farm. It also requires the chicken to be raised in spacious conditions and have access to the outdoors. Moreover, the feed the chickens consume must be certified organic. Organic chicken may also contain a bit more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids than regular chicken. However, this difference is minimal. CR has found that both contain about the same amount of fat.

No GMOs

Choosing organic chicken might seem like just another trendy health fad, but it is actually good for us. With antibiotic resistance on the rise, it’s important to choose meat that is not treated with antibiotics. This is especially important for consumers who are taking antibiotics, as the consumption of untreated chicken can lead to bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.

Besides not being given any antibiotics or hormones, organic chicken is free-range and has access to the outdoors throughout the year. They are also fed organic grain, supplements and vitamins. They are also not treated with any chemical preservatives or coloring solutions. Organic chicken has a lower carbon footprint than conventionally raised chicken as well.

No Animal by-products

The fact that organic chicken is never treated with antibiotics or other drugs makes it a safer and more healthful alternative to conventionally raised meat. It also means that any pesticides or other medicinal elements absorbed from the feed or environment do not make it to the human consumer.

Organic chicken farmers are required to use only organic feed, kitchen or garden scraps and natural bedding and provide their chickens with access to the outdoors year-round. They must also keep their chickens in generally clean housing that provides at least two square feet per bird and require annual inspections.

Many grocery store packages of chicken have a variety of stamps on them, including all-natural, free-range and hormone-free. However, these terms have very little meaning and can be misleading.

No Genetically Modified Food

A lot of consumers purchase organic chicken to avoid antibiotics and toxins found in conventionally raised chicken. While research hasn’t proven that organic food has any significant health benefits, many people believe it is a better choice for the environment and their own well-being.

To be certified organic, chickens must have access to the outdoors and be fed organic feed. The feed can’t contain any chemicals or pesticides and must be grown with no GMO seeds.

The result is a happier, healthier life for the chickens. They have a higher level of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and are less likely to carry bacteria like Salmonella (when properly cooked). Plus, the extra cash spent on purchasing organic chicken will help support smaller farmers. And, the quality of their life is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are organic foods healthier?

According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
