Frequently Asked Questions

Why is organic produce important?

Our health is dependent on organic produce. It's the best way to ensure we eat nutritious foods. It's better for us and more sustainable because it doesn’t depend on pesticides or fertilizers.

Organic farming uses natural methods of cultivating crops that are free from harmful chemicals. This means fewer environmental pollutants, making it safer for humans and animals. So when you choose organic food, you're helping to protect yourself and the planet.

The benefits of organic food go beyond our health, though. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. Did you know that organic fruits and veggies aren't subject to chemical spray? It means that organic fruits, vegetables and other foods are fresher tasting, more vibrant and last longer.

Because of this, organic foods are so important. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

Why should I buy organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Make healthy food choices.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.

Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.

The USDA defines organic as crops grown in accordance with strict federal regulations. These foods cannot be grown by farmers using conventional methods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.

A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. Some farms don't label their products 100% organic, as it could confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

Are organic foods better?

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.

Statistics

  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products

Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or irradiated ingredients. Their production processes do not include sewage or industrial solvents. The food's natural environment is protected from contamination during its growth cycle. It is free of artificial preservatives and additives. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. They are also made in conditions that maintain their nutritional value and freshness for longer times.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals than nonorganic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. This also means that you are consuming less toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Because it takes so much energy to grow conventionally, organic farms tend to be located far away from urban areas where there's plenty of pollution. This helps reduce pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. The rotation of crops and the letting of land fallow can improve soil health. Farm animals that eat only grasses, grains and no antibiotics develop strong immune systems.
  4. Taste. Traditional fruits and vegetables are often bland due to the fact that they are picked at peak ripeness and shipped long distances for grocery stores. Organic produce is sweeter and richer because it was harvested at the peak of its ripeness.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs are harmful chemicals found in many conventional processed foods. You can avoid them by sticking with whole foods such meat, fish, eggs, seafood, seeds and beans, as well as fruits, veggies, herbs, and vegetables.
