According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.


What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.


What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

To eat well, you don't have to spend a lot. Sometimes, you have to use your creativity to save money while still eating well. Here's my list of ways to keep your food costs down while enjoying organic meat's benefits.

  1. Buy at wholesale clubs - Costco and Sams Club are great places to shop for bulk foods like chicken breasts and pork chops. These stores often offer discounts on large quantities of meat, up to 50 pounds, if you are lucky enough to be near one. You won't have to waste meat. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
  2. Look online to save money on meat. For example, Amazon has a weekly deal called Prime Pantry, which includes free shipping on orders over $35. There are discounts on roasts, ground beef and lamb steaks as well as pork loins. It's simple to visit their website to view the latest offerings at different times.
  3. Find a local farmer - Local farmers usually charge less than big box retailers because they do not pay considerable fees to stock their shelves. Local farmers also know exactly what their animals have eaten and drank so they can determine what's in their bodies.
