Frequently Asked Questions

How do you know if your food is organic?

If you ask any chef, he'll tell you there's nothing more important than fresh ingredients. It's because we feel better when food is well-prepared.

The same is true of our food. When we buy organics, we know exactly where it came from and how it was grown. We also know that it didn't have any harmful chemicals.

Organic food does not contain synthetic pesticides, fertilers, hormones or antibiotics. Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.

Organic farming doesn't have to be difficult. There are many ways to safely grow organic crops.

Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.

Organic farming practices include crop rotations and cover crops, manure composting, intercropping, and cover cropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.

They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Since most of us live in urban areas, we can find local farms that raise organic produce.

There are two types of certification programs for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies the one while the independent certifying agency certifies the other. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.

Certified organic products may bear the USDA seal or the symbol O Seal, which indicates that the product meets federal requirements.

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

Is organic a guarantee that the product is pesticide-free

Organic food is organic and free of pesticides. This means there is little or no exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides.

Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.

The USDA National Organic Program, (NOP), requires farmers to adhere to strict guidelines when cultivating organic crops.

These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotating, pest control and water conservation.

Organic farming methods also benefit wildlife and natural environments.

How To

Are there any downsides to organic products?

Organic food is well-known for its many health benefits. However, organic foods have their drawbacks. There are also higher consumer prices and lower quality standards.

It's okay to want more variety in grocery shopping. However, we have been taught to expect poor quality food. This is why most grocery stores stock identical prepackaged products.

Organic food is increasingly becoming popular, thanks to the fact that it has better nutrition and tastes amazing. How can you convince people it is worth spending a little more?

It's possible to tell them that organic food is more expensive. However, this doesn't mean that organic food tastes better. It may even make them question your motives.

Instead, you should highlight its many benefits. Organic food is more nutritious and has fewer pesticides or antibiotics. Organic food is healthier for you and your environment because it doesn't contain synthetic fertilizers or herbicides.

Many people turn down organic food simply because it is too costly. If they take into account the health benefits, however, they might decide that spending a few extra dollars per week is worthwhile.

The reason why organic food tastes better is that it's produced under strict guidelines that prevent contamination. It tends also to retain more vitamins and minerals.

Organic food is also tastier because it's picked later in the season. This makes organic food fresher and easier for you to digest.

Organic food is typically cheaper, because organic farming requires less labour and fertilizer.
