Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.

  • Fragrance-Free means that the product doesn't contain any essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients – The ingredient is naturally derived either from a plant or an animal.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian - the ingredients are either vegan or vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free is a label that indicates that no gluten was added to the product.
  • Non-Toxic-The product doesn't contain any toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and/or other harmful substances that could be harmful to your health.
  • Biodegradable - the product will break down into harmless components when discarded.
  • Pesticide Free – There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
  • GMO-Free is a declaration that the product does not contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic refers to ingredients that were grown using methods that protect soil, water, air, wildlife and farmers.


Is organic food good for you?

There are two types: foods that we grow and those that we purchase from others. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is healthier since it doesn't include any harmful chemicals.

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.

The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.

Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
