Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.

Organic products will be the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

However, they are also more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to know which foods are popular today and whether trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.


How can I determine if my produce was organic?

These three labels are essential if you want to be certain that you are purchasing organic produce.

USDA Organic Certified: Produces certified by USDA as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.

These labels indicate that the product meets certain criteria.

For healthy eating, you don’t have to spend a lot. Sometimes creativity is required to make money while still eating healthy. Here's my list to help you keep food costs low while still enjoying all the health benefits of organic meat.

  1. Wholesale clubs - Sams Club, Costco, and Sams Club offer great deals on bulk foods like chicken breasts. You can often find deals on large quantities (up to 50 pounds) if you live close to one of these stores. You won't have to waste meat. If you buy it in bulk you can freeze it so it lasts more.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. Amazon has Prime Pantry, a weekly sale that offers free shipping for orders over $35. They offer discounts for beef roasts and ground beef as well as lamb steaks, lamb steaks, pork loins, and other items. You can browse their website and view what's on sale at different times.
  3. Local farmers will usually be cheaper than big-box retailers since they don't pay large fees to stock their shelves. They know exactly what the animals ate and drank to ensure they are fully informed about what is in their bodies.
  4. Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. The leanest cuts are therefore preferred. The most popular cuts are flank steak, sirloin steak and tenderloin roast. These cuts are low in fat and high-protein.
