Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between organic food and inorganic?
Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.
"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. But natural does not necessarily imply organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
Why is organic food important?
Our health is dependent on organic produce. It's the best method to ensure you eat healthy foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.
Organic farming uses natural methods of cultivating crops that are free from harmful chemicals. This results in fewer environmental pollutants and makes organic farming safer. When you choose organic food, both you and the earth are protected.
However, organic food is good for our health. We all know how toxic processed food can make you feel. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. They taste fresher, look better and last longer.
This is why organic food is so important. It's healthy for you and the planet.
How can I determine if my produce was organic?
These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.
USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.
Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.
These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:
- No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
- No genetically modified organisms
- Animals are never given antibiotics
- Animals are not ever given hormones.
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- There is no sewage sludge
- GMOs prohibited
- Never was an antibiotic given
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting medications
- No feed-additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No sewage sludge, if it's not a GMO
- No irradiation

What are the benefits of organic farming?
Organic farming provides farmers with a way of producing food without using chemicals. Farmers don't have worry about whether harmful pesticides are affecting their crops or animals.
Organic farming also permits for the use of natural fertilizers. These fertilizers are good for plants that are healthy and reduce chemical waste.
Organic farming is also eco-friendly. Farmers often use composting techniques to recycle nutrients back into the soil. This reduces pollution and conserves valuable resources.
Organic farming can increase crop yields and help the environment. This is because organic farming requires less water to grow the crops.
Organic production methods mean farmers can get higher prices. Consumers who are more aware about the dangers associated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other chemicals will choose healthier foods.
This drives up the demand for organic products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.
Are there health benefits to eating organic food?
Even though organic foods might not be for everyone, there are some health benefits. They can be beneficial for your health if you eat them often.
Organic food is produced without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic produce is free from harmful chemicals that could cause harm to human health.
Additionally, organic products are less likely to contain additives during processing. Organic products are healthier than those that use additives during processing.
Studies have shown organic foods have more nutrients and antioxidants that conventionally grown fruits, vegetables.
While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. When farmers grow crops organically, they encourage soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps prevent erosion and conserve water. Organic farms do not require toxic chemicals to operate. They also use less energy and fuel.
People are worried that organic foods may be more expensive then conventional. Prices can vary depending on where you live. Organic apples, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive that conventional apples.
But, if we look at the total cost of a combination of both types and fruits, we'll see organic is much cheaper.
So should you go organic?
It all depends upon who you are. You shouldn't bother if you don't enjoy organic food.
You can still buy organic food if your preference is for good tasting food. Organic foods are safer than conventional food because they don't contain chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.

How To
5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products
Organic foods are grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production methods do not involve sewage sludge or industrial solvents. During the course of its growth cycle, the natural environment of the food is protected from contamination. It does not contain artificial preservatives or additives. There are no hormones and antibiotics used. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce is more chemically-laden than organic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. You also consume fewer toxic substances and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizer needs very little water. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. That helps reduce air pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility rather than chemical fertilizers; this results in healthier soils with higher levels of organic matter. Rotating crops and allowing the soil to rest between harvests improves soil health. Strong immune systems develop when farm animals are fed only grasses grown without antibiotics or added hormones.
- Taste. Because they are picked at their peak ripeness and then shipped long distances to supermarkets, conventional fruits and vegetables can often taste bland. Because it was picked while still unripe, organic produce is richer and more flavorful.
- Nutrition. GMOs, BPA, and other harmful chemicals are often found in conventional processed foods. You can avoid them by sticking with whole foods such meat, fish, eggs, seafood, seeds and beans, as well as fruits, veggies, herbs, and vegetables.
