The health benefits of organic foods go well beyond our bodies. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. Did you know that organic fruits and veggies aren't subject to chemical spray? That means that they taste fresher, look brighter and last longer too.
That's why eating organic matters so much. Because it's not only healthy for you, it's healthier for the world.
Why should I buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.
Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables
Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.
Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."
Always read the ingredient lists. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.
Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.
What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products
USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.
When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To
5 Reasons Why You Should Buy Organic Products
Organic foods do not use pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. They are not made with sewage sludge, industrial solvents, or any other chemical substances. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is completely free from artificial preservatives, additives, and other harmful chemicals. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce has more chemicals than organic. Organic produce is healthier. This makes it less likely to cause allergies or sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without synthetic fertilizer and pesticides requires very little water. Because it takes so much energy to grow conventionally, organic farms tend to be located far away from urban areas where there's plenty of pollution. That helps reduce air pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming relies less on chemical fertilizers and more on soil fertility. This results with healthier soils with greater organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. When farm animals eat only grasses and grains raised without any added hormones or antibiotics, they develop strong immune systems.
- Taste. Because they are picked at their peak ripeness and then shipped long distances to supermarkets, conventional fruits and vegetables can often taste bland. Organic produce is more rich and sweetened because it was harvested when it was still unripe.
- Nutrition. Many conventional processed foods contain harmful substances like BPA and GMOs. If you want to avoid these, stick to whole foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, beans, fruit, veggies, and herbs.
