These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
Why should I go organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.
USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.
Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."
Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.
It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.
What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?
USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
If you are buying other types of livestock, make sure to check the label to determine the percentage of their diet. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?
Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.
In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.
In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.
The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.
There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.
A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
