Unlike conventional farms, where meat and dairy animals are fed on synthetically-treated feeds, animal raised for organic products must be allowed to graze on pasture land. They are also not allowed to be held in crowded animal feeding operations, or CAFOs.

However, hens, cattle and pigs on organic farms still often suffer the same brutal mutilations used on factory farms--such as debeaking, dehorning and castration without painkillers--or be forced to undergo ear-notching and slap marking, which is the press of a spiked metal plate with ink into a pig's skin.

The USDA recently proposed new standards that would require farmers to meet specific animal living conditions, transportation and slaughter standards. This rule is expected to take effect in January 2022.

These are intended to promote animal well-being and support the integrity of the organic label.

Slaughter is one of the most important processes in the life of a farmed animal. It has a profound effect on the lifetime welfare of an animal, and is therefore a key concern in animal welfare research and policy making.

Sustainability

Choosing organic meat and poultry products that use humane slaughter practices contributes to animal welfare and sustainability. This is especially true when the animals are raised without the use of synthetic chemicals, fed a diet that contains no herbicides or pesticides, and given access to the outdoors.

Here are some tips to help you find low-cost organic meats. Also, how much per pound they cost. Learn how to get maximum value from the products you buy.

For healthy eating, you don’t have to spend a lot. Sometimes, it takes a bit of creativity to save money while eating well. Here's my list to help you keep food costs low while still enjoying all the health benefits of organic meat.

  1. Buy at wholesale clubs - Costco and Sams Club are great places to shop for bulk foods like chicken breasts and pork chops. If you are fortunate enough to live near one, you may be able get discounts up to 50 lbs on large quantities. This will ensure that you don't waste any meat. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
  2. Online shopping is a great way to find meat at a discounted price. For example, Amazon has a weekly deal called Prime Pantry, which includes free shipping on orders over $35. You can get discounts on ground beef, beef roasts, lamb steaks and pork loins. You can easily browse their website to see what is available at different times.
  3. Look for a local farmer. They usually charge less than big-box retailers, as they don't have to pay large stocking fees. Because they know exactly the diets and drinks of their animals, local farmers can provide a better understanding of what's inside.
  4. Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. The leanest cuts are therefore preferred. The most popular are sirloin or flank steak, tenderloin roasts, top round steak, and top roast steak. These cuts are high in protein and low in fat.
  5. Try new recipes. Cooking with new ingredients is one of the best ways to cut your grocery bills. You may be amazed at the variety of delicious dishes that you can make with fresh tomatoes, onions garlic, olive oil and spices.
