What are some of the most popular organic products in your country?

Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.

The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.

This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.

  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)

How To

5 Reasons to buy organic products

Organic foods are grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production does not use sewage sludge and industrial solvents. During the growth process, food is kept clean from any contamination. It is free of artificial preservatives and additives. No hormones or antibiotics are used. They are also grown in conditions that ensure they retain their nutritional value for longer periods of time.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals than nonorganic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. It also means you're consuming fewer toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organic produce is low in water consumption. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. This helps to reduce the amount of air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility, rather than chemical fertilisers. This results in healthier soils and higher levels organic matter. The rotation of crops and the letting of land fallow can improve soil health. Strong immune systems are developed when farm animals only eat grasses and grains that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Because it was picked while still unripe, organic produce is richer and more flavorful.
  5. Nutrition. Many conventional processed foods contain harmful substances like BPA and GMOs. You can avoid them by sticking with whole foods such meat, fish, eggs, seafood, seeds and beans, as well as fruits, veggies, herbs, and vegetables.
