Frequently Asked Questions

Do organic foods offer health benefits?

Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.

Organic food is produced without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.

Also, there are fewer additives that are used in processing. So when you buy an organic product, you're likely eating healthier than non-organic products.

Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.

Even though organic farming methods can be more costly than conventional farming methods they are often more productive. Organic farming increases soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps to prevent erosion and conserve water resources. Plus, because organic farms aren't treated with toxic chemicals, these farms typically require less energy and fuel.

Some people worry that organic foods are more expensive than conventional ones. However, prices will vary depending on where one lives. For example, organic apples are generally more expensive than conventional apples.

But if you look at the total price of a basket of both types of fruit, you'll see that buying organic is cheaper.

Do you really need to buy organic?

It all depends upon who you are. Organic food is not for you if you don’t like it.

You can purchase organic food if it is delicious. Organic food is safer because organic produce is not grown by commercial growers who use pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Organic agriculture helps to protect the environment by conserving natural resources, and promoting biodiversity.

Why should I buy organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

What are the most loved organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

However, they are also more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce does not contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and sewage sludge. It is also grown without irradiation or genetic engineering. No growth hormones are used. Animal testing is also not done. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.

Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic products tend to be higher in fiber and lower fat than conventionally produced foods.

  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods are made from animals and plants without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They are produced without genetic engineering or the application of ionizing radiation. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It should not contain genetically modified animals (GMOs).

In 1845, Justus von Liebig, a chemist, first coined the term "organic", meaning "life-giving", to describe the properties and characteristics of manure. Most people associate organic with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.

The consumption of organic foods has risen dramatically in the past decades. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This figure is on the rise and it is predicted to grow to 70%, 88%, and 90% in 2020.

There are many factors that consumers choose organic produce. Organic products are preferred by many people for their taste and health. Some also prefer organic produce because of the higher quality. Others believe that organic farming is more sustainable. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.

While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. There are other factors such as transportation costs, marketing and taxes. For example, in Europe, the average price of organic food is 10% higher than the regular price.
