Organic foods are better for us.
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.
Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.
Statistics
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
- According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
- Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)

How To
What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?
Organic products are produced without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. The term "organic" means they do not contain any chemicals or additives. This product was produced by nature and therefore contains no harmful substances.
Natural refers to the way food was grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are often fresher than others because they haven't been treated with heat, radiation, or chemical preservatives. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Experts believe there is no difference in organic and conventional food. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce is safer than conventionally produced produce.
Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
